continuing on with bram stoker’s dracula, may i present lucy westerna. lucy was mina’s best friend. she was the beautiful, angelic 19 year old daughter of an aristocratic family. she is loved by three suitors, all who propose to her on the same day but her health quickly and mysteriously deteriorates. one of her suitors calls his friend, dr. van helsing to remedy her illness. they soon learn that dracula has been draining lucy’s blood and unfortunately, it’s too late. soon after she is buried, children in town begin disappearing and several report seeing a “bloofer” (read: beautiful) woman walking the streets. that bloofer is lucy’s damned vampire self. dracula had doomed her to vampirism and it is up to van helsing and the men who loved her to set her soul free. rather gruesomely, they destroy the vampire and free lucy’s soul. that’s some heavy shit.

after the last couture season, i started seeing parallels between pokemon and some of the pieces on the runway-check the post. the resemblances were pretty striking, particularly the givenchy jigglypuff ensemble. anyway, now that fall 2010 couture has ended i present to you the pokemon couture.
couture, i choose you!
1: givenchy and mewtwo: pretty much all of givenchy reminded me of mewtwo and mew. the bone detailing and silhouettes scream legendary and scientifically bred pokemon.
2: valentino and gastly: i hate the ghost pokemon but the tulle layer over this dress reminded me of gastly right away. the model’s eyes look similar to his too. wierd.
3: elie saab and charizard: the bat wing sleeves and print made this an easy choice. charizarrrrddd
4: chanel and bulbasaur: karl lagerfeld skinned an ivysaur and made a dress. boom.
5: christian dior and vileplume: the floral collection galliano sent out had plenty of pokemon references (particularly grass pokemon, duh) but this violet and magenta number shouted vileplume like none other.

sidenote: i stick with the original 151 pokemon, old school.
i always felt like desdemona of shakespeare’s othello was helpless. like a lot of shakespearean damsels, she was the pawn of schemes around her. she up and left venice to elope and accompany othello in his travels. as the plot unfolds we see that she is made to look like a two timing hussie with cassio by iago. all this is done because iago feels cassio was wrongly promoted over him by othello. confused? no worries…it’s shakespeare. anyway, upon duping othello into thinking cassio and desdemona were knocking boots, othello promises iago a promotion if he kills cassio. iago in turn convinces roderigo, who is in love with desdemona to kill cassio. things start getting crazy, othello smothers desdemona, iago kills roderigo, iago kills emilia, othello kills himself and then iago gets arrested. that’s a super bare bones version but as you can see, desdemona was pretty helpless…so she’d probably wear flowy dresses, right?

the romantic portrait of the romanov family as do-good monarchs victimized by an irrational people is a little off to say the least. russia suffered a great deal under their watch, compounded by global change and world war i the country turned against their leaders. when it came to tsarina alexandra, they never liked her to begin with. she was more devoted to her personal life than her political duties and when the time came for her to rule in her husband’s absence, the country faltered even more. lets not even mention the whole rasputin thing. long story short, she probably had some nice furs.
