Last week, I had the unique, and probably only opportunity I’ll have (at least in the near future) to speak with Carine Roitfeld. Anybody who keeps an eye on the fashion world knows who she is, former EIC of Vogue Paris and current EIC of CR Fashion Book, a new publication of her own vision. Carine’s reputation preceded her, and the prospect of speaking with her was intimidating at the very least.
Several of us were somewhat awkwardly waiting for her arrival in a large open room. Mindless conversation and the usual chatter was broken when she arrived through the elevator entry, entourage in tow. Luckily for us, Andre J (pictured above with Carine), a former Vogue Paris cover star was their to diffuse the initial tension. After a brief introduction to all of us, Carine began to discuss what lie ahead for CR Fashion Book. Like any good EIC, she didn’t reveal the entire thing, but left us with eyebrows raised in anticipation, diffusing skepticism.
The main message Carine shared was optimistic. It’s clear that she wants something new, she’s done Vogue Paris, and longs to share a new perspective. An admirable vision? Certainly. There was talk of color, of undiscovered photographers and designers and ultimately, a very precise understanding that fashion as a study, an industry, whatever you’d like to call it, is a positive place. So often people see it for its exclusivity and frivolity, Carine sees it for its possibilities. While musing on her latest project she shared, “I see fashion as a way of dreaming,” and reiterated that regardless of an individual, “everyone has something beautiful.”
If Carine is true to her word, and I’m fairly certain she is, CR Fashion Book will no doubt be a welcome addition to the newsstand. In the meantime, keep a weather eye on CRFashionBook.com.
