it’s everybody’s favorite little rich girl, veruca salt. if you’re familiar with the book and the willie wonka films, then you know she is the epitome of spoiled brat. in fact, state of the art wonka equipment determines she is a “bad egg” and sends her down to the garbage after this (i recommend clicking if you’re not familiar) little rant. her father had a nasty habit of following every demand she made, so there’s no telling what a penchant for fashion would do. i’d imagine she’d just point, command and purchase…brat.

take a minute to listen to the audio clip below. i love this song so much, always puts a smile on my face. the song sings of elenore, who is styled above. written in 1968, i imagine the elenore of then to be one of those music loving free spirit types. it was a great era for music and just in general, lots of moving and shaking happening. elenore of today would be similar, music loving, free spirited and just one of those personalities that’s so attractive. not so much the coolest girl in school but that girl that nobody has a problem with. gee, she’s swell.

this post isn’t so much about a literary character or a historical personality but, indulge me. i saw an education a few months ago and i loved it. long story short is that a teenager gets involved with an older man who offers her escape from high school and suburban doldrums. she trades books for weekends in paris, gambling, cavorting with glamorous types and the good life. of course, it all comes crashing down but you have to love the excitement of her new life. naturally, she gets all new clothes too.

in the spirit of thanksgiving, i give you pocahontas. thanksgiving is all about the joining of two cultures, native american and native american invaders (oh, snap…whatever). pocahontas had little to do with the actual holiday itself but she is a solid reminder of it’s meanings. there are horrible tales of native american assimilation gone wrong and one could argue that the task was never truly completed. pocahontas was one who fought for a co-existence of the native americans and the new americans. travelling to england to visit the queen and explore the world beyond the shores, she was a pioneer. however, contrary to disney’s portrayal, she did not bring her intelligent animal friends along…everybody knows raccoons are not seafaring creatures. in any event, fashion often accomplishes what pocahontas sought to: succesfully merge 2 cultures. we saw this in fall 2008 (among other seasons) with the japanese influence showcased by rodarte and particularly in rachel roy’s collection that fused native american and pioneer culture. of course we see this often, but i thought fall 08 was a fantastic example. today, pocahontas would have the same burdens as any other politician but lets hope she’d dress herself more like mobama than hilary.
1: pocahontas was after all, a princess: dress, gloves and necklace by rachel roy, tights and shoes by ralph lauren
