sara crewe of a little princess had a tough life. when she was just a child in finishing school she learned of her father’s death. to add insult to injury, their great fortune was lost by a friend who invested unwisely. left penniless and all by herself she becomes a servant to her boarding school and the wretched miss. minchin. the story holds that she finds comfort for years by imagining herself as a princess (essentially her old self). as luck would have it for sara, her father’s friend who lost all their money regained the fortune and by happy coincidence moves in across the street from her school. the story unfolds and the two are united. sara has a new guardian who restores her previous life (minus her father) and disgraces the greedy miss minchin. if i’ve learned one thing working in the fashion industry it’s that those that have wild imaginations tend to have the best style and for those that think they’re princesses it goes double. so imagine if ms. crewe grew older, a princess in her own right with a limitless checkbook? jealous? yah you are.

when thinking of romeo and juliet i often forget how young they were. once the whole story plays out she is barely a teenager and even her father considers marriage proposals from “the valiant paris” too hasty. however, i need not get in to the details of this story for we all know it very well. instead, consider a fourteen year old’s take on the clothing. it’s one of those ages where everything can be so fun, bright colors, quirky silhouettes and basically anything goes. now, juliet is a capulet which probably means she wanted for very little in her life. and if the heiresses and socialite daughters of today teach us anything, it’s that they each have loveable style all their own (thinking more of lydia hearst and byrdie bell types not hiltons or lohans). so without further delay, i give you juliet capulet…a charming young woman of verona.

when i think of queen victoria the word that comes to mind is dignified. perhaps it’s just because of the imagery i’ve seen of her, who could forget that statue where she’s enthroned and looking out into the distance? it’s a pretty powerful image and you can tell that she means business. my favorite of her accomplishments (along with her husband albert) was the crystal palace exhibition where the world showcased technology and culture. to me it seemed one of those pivotal moments in history where everybody realized the future is going to come barreling towards us and we’ll be charging right at it. of course she today would walk that fine line between dowdy and dignified (a feat not accomplished by some of her contemporaries).
