another jane austen one for y’all today, elinor dashwood from sense and sensibility. this story is pretty complicated and i’m sure you’ve heard some version of it before so i’ll be brief. let’s just say it’s very austen, sensible smart girl falls victim to the society around her and must disobey her heart’s desire. various events occur in which the man of her desire realizes how much he loves and needs her (with some mistaken identity situations in between) and they live happily ever after in a kick ass english country manor. done.

the lion, the witch and the wardrobe was one of my favorite books when i was a kid. the book (and the rest of the series) take place in narnia, which lucy pevensie found through a wardrobe one day while playing hide and seek. when lucy and her siblings first stumble upon it, narnia is at the mercy of the white witch who keeps it in an endless winter. unfair. for lucy’s part, she (with her sister susan) help aslan revive an army of the white witch’s victims. after the big battle, she heals the fallen soldiers in asland’s army and is eventually crowned lucy the valiant. there’s more to it than that but basically, she’s awesome. more pevensies and narnians headed your way…just saying.

when i think of queen victoria the word that comes to mind is dignified. perhaps it’s just because of the imagery i’ve seen of her, who could forget that statue where she’s enthroned and looking out into the distance? it’s a pretty powerful image and you can tell that she means business. my favorite of her accomplishments (along with her husband albert) was the crystal palace exhibition where the world showcased technology and culture. to me it seemed one of those pivotal moments in history where everybody realized the future is going to come barreling towards us and we’ll be charging right at it. of course she today would walk that fine line between dowdy and dignified (a feat not accomplished by some of her contemporaries).
1: i mean business: suit by oscar de la renta, shirt by stella mccartney, tights and shoes by yves saint laurent
2: state function time: dress and shoes by reem acra

while i was doing the research for my previous pocahontas post (woohoo alliteration) i started with rachel roy and then slid around american collections from fall 2008. when thinking of american designers i start at the top, ralph, michael, oscar, carolina etc. michael kors fall 08 show was the first one i ever went to and after reviewing it seasons later, it remains one of my favorites of all time. i defy anybody to say that these clothes aren’t timeless. fall ‘54, fall ‘08 and fall ‘54 in the 20’s, they’ll work. just some love for the kors.
