continuing with willie wonka at the behest of kristina (http://lucaluca.tumblr.com) i give you violet beauregarde. in the book and both films, violet is depicted as fiercely competitive. this spirit is illustrated with her gum chewing titles and her friendly rivalry with fellow competitor, cornelia, ha. anyway, violet always seemed to be simple in contrast to her counterpart, veruca. that doesn’t mean she was exactly kind though. she doesn’t seem the type that would grow up to be a fashion plate so i’m sure her style would take the backseat to her competitions. however, simple doesn’t mean she couldn’t be chic.

this post isn’t so much about a literary character or a historical personality but, indulge me. i saw an education a few months ago and i loved it. long story short is that a teenager gets involved with an older man who offers her escape from high school and suburban doldrums. she trades books for weekends in paris, gambling, cavorting with glamorous types and the good life. of course, it all comes crashing down but you have to love the excitement of her new life. naturally, she gets all new clothes too.
