PERSEPHONE, QUEEN OF HADES

So this past weekend I was boning up on my Greek Mythology, you know by watching Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief because I’m 13 and I thought I’d give Persephone a try. Traditionally she is known as queen of Hades but before that she was just a goddess who was chillin. One day she was hanging out with her nymph friends and Hades kidnapped her. TWIST! Meanwhile, back at Chez Olympus, her mother started flipping out and demanded that she be returned. Hades bowed to the gods’ will but before she left, Persephone ate some pomegranate seeds. As fate would have it, those who eat or drink in the Underworld must stay there FOREVER. However, Persephone was able to spend one season of the year in Hades and live the rest above. The Greeks believed this to be the reason behind the four season—when Persephone is in Hades, her mother’s sadness keeps us in winter. Fun.

LYDIA BENNET, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

What’s an Elizabeth Bennet post without one of her sisters? Let’s look at Lydia, the flirtatious frivolous one, the carefree one, the one who like just doesn’t care about anything. Her behavior puts her family’s reputation in jeopardy along with her own well-being. After running away with the villainous Mr. Wickham and he is bribed to marry her, she considers it a fine marriage. I don’t know, Lydia’s just a bit of an airhead. I know a lot of girls like Lydia and sooner or later things catch up with them and they go crazy. But it’s always fun to watch.

FLEUR DELACOUR, HARRY POTTER WEEK

I am so frightfully tired this morning and I have no idea why. I need to get it together because tonight is the most important night of my life thus far, the premiere of Deathly Hallows. Today, let’s take a look at quarter Veela Fleur Delacour. We’re first presented with the Beauxbatons student in The Goblet of Fire but she comes back strong towards the end of the series after marrying Ron’s brother, Bill. Now, since she’s basically part nymph and one of Beauxbatons’ brightest students you know she’d have some killer style. Enjoy it, y’all.

JOAN OF ARC

Ahoy mateys! So, as Textbook is now almost a year and half old, I seem to be running out of ideas. Luckily, the seasons of fashion change giving me new ways to experiment. Having said that, I’d like to revisit Joan of Arc. Our heroine is responsible for bringing a nation together in a time of great crisis and unrest. As fate would have it, political turmoil and intrigue put Joan to a cruel fate and she was burned as a witch and heretic by the English. Of course, one wonders how exactly Joan would fair in this age? Would she have an epic twitter following? A life-casting blog? Or perhaps she’d be a commanding officer, either way you can’t deny her lasting impression on the world.
