catherine earnshaw was quite the tortured soul, much like all the other characters in wuthering heights. her childhood was happy enough and she formed a close relationship with her foster brother, heathcliff. the two had some good times until fate took catherine to thruscross grange. after spying on the fancy home with heathcliff, a dog attacked catherine and she stayed at the grange where she was educated on how to ‘be a lady’. this education forever changed her but heathcliff remained devoted to her. long story short, she marries a rich man (from thruscross of course), heathcliff disappears, comes back, catherine’s love for heathcliff drives her insane, she dies, haunts everybody in the world and heathcliff dies. hooray!

this post isn’t so much about a literary character or a historical personality but, indulge me. i saw an education a few months ago and i loved it. long story short is that a teenager gets involved with an older man who offers her escape from high school and suburban doldrums. she trades books for weekends in paris, gambling, cavorting with glamorous types and the good life. of course, it all comes crashing down but you have to love the excitement of her new life. naturally, she gets all new clothes too.

lizzy bennet is one of the most celebrated characters in literature. in pride and prejudice she was well liked, bright and grounded with charm. the whole book she sort of exudes this attraction, not just because she’s pretty but because she’s pretty cool too. so basically, she was that one popular girl in school who was actually nice too. if you’ve been to high school/college on the east coast you know that this girl usually dresses pretty freakin’ awesome. keeping this in mind and acknowledging her slight country bumpkin-ness, i give you elizabeth bennet from pride and prejudice. BOOM.

i feel most people don’t know the true telling of sleeping beauty and we can thank walt disney for that. the original story is far more gruesome and intriguing. true, the princess wanders to the spinning wheel and falls asleep for 100 years only to be woken by true love’s kiss. perrault (who penned the first version) has the valiant prince john (awesome) come and wake the princess with a kiss and they marry in secret and have two children. the family remains anonymous until prince john becomes king and they return to his kingdom which he leaves in the care of his mother…who happens to be an ogre, yah how glamorous. the ogress hates the new queen and banishes her to the woods where she instructs the cooks to prepare the children in a special sauce (no joke). the cook, taking pity upon the family (as servants often do in fairy tales, see snow white) hides the children and serves lamb and goat instead. the ogress then orders up a helping of the young queen who willingly offers her life, believing her beloved children have been killed but the cook re-unites them all. unfortunately for the royal family the ogress gets wise and sentences them all to die together in a pit of vipers. ouch. but what luck! prince john arrives at the sentencing and rescues the fair family and the ogress throws herself into the pit! hooray! and then all live happily ever after…in reem acra i’m sure.
