is it so wrong to want the finer things in life? emma bovary didn’t think so, in fact she thought she was entitled to them. emma was a farmer’s daughter who married his doctor, she quickly became bored with marriage and provincial life. emma was sure that by acquiring the finer things, she would be content. she was so consumed by her fascination that she ran up a riotous debt, had two affairs and eventually committed suicide. the saddest part of the whole thing is that emma thought all the fortune, the aristocracy, the opera, the parties and the fancy things would bring her happiness. she failed to realize that all of these things often bring misery and that in the end, nobody is really any better off than anybody else. when all her debts and the schemes of her jerk banker caught up to her, she swallowed some arsenic in typical emma bovary melodramatic fashion. all that said, she still is somehow likable.1: oh, i’m just the farmer’s daughter: dress by tory burch, shoes by derek lam, bag by marc by marc jacobs, hat by erin fetherston2: hopping to paris with my lover: dress and bag by christian dior, hat by marc jacobs, shoes by calvin klein3: i totally can’t afford this dress: dress by oscar de la renta, shoes by christian diorAll images from Style.com.

with yesterday’s zelda post, i figured today would be a good day for link. link is the hero of the legend of zelda, whether it’s ocarina of time, the wind fish egg, a link to the past, majora’s mask, twilight princess, wind waker or any of the other ones that have sucked my life away. anyway, link has three different tunics that give him different abilities. the first is the green tunic—your standard ensemble for hanging around hyrule market or kokiri forest. the red tunic protects him from fire and the blue tunic allows him to breathe underwater (best used with iron boots). basically, the legend of zelda is awesome and now that i’ve been blogging about it for two days…i may just have to start playing again. 1: hanging in kokiri forest: jacket by richard chai, cardigan by marc by marc jacobs, henley shirt by gilded age, pants by michael bastian, vintage shoes2: heading to goron city and the fire temple: coat, hoodie and scarf by john varvatos, shirt by burberry prorsum, pants by bottega veneta, vintage boots3: lounging around lake hylia: jacket by burberry prorsum, shirt by richard chai, jeans by gilded age, vintage bootsAll images from Style.com.

this one might be a bit of a stretch, but indulge me. so when i was a kid, i think i spent a good part of my time playing the legend of zelda. aside from being one of the best game series of all time, it had a pretty decent story. wind fishes, temples of time, crazy mountain trolls, all sorts of things. the princess zelda was a key part of the story (duh) and she often helped the adventurer, link in his quest. she was also one of three who could wield a piece of the tri-force in the ocarina of time. not making any sense? wikipedia it. enjoy.1: spying in the castle garden: dress by chanel, she’s not wearing any shoes.2: going to visit the temple of time: dress by derek lam, shoes by givenchy3: pretending to be that guy sheikh: jumpsuit by marc by marc jacobs, boots by burberry prorsumAll images from Style.com.

i had a lot of requests for esther from the bell jar, so here goes. regardless of her mental issues, i think esther was probably really a little quirky, off beat and likable, especially in this day and age. so she didn’t like the glitz trampy new york city life? who could blame her? most people i know are much like her, same sort of career (she interned at a fashion mag) and same distaste for the “scene” of it all. eventually, esther’s mental health deteriorated and she entered treatment. she equates her depression to being trapped under a bell jar, struggling to breath and survive. after several suicide attempts, esther moves to a new facility with a new doctor, dr. nolan. she prescribes electro-shock therapy and has esther fitted for a diaphragm, freeing her from fear of sex and its consequences. additionally, her friend joan commits suicide—helping esther fully understand death and the story ends esther heading to an exit interview. hooray, esther kicks ass. 1: i’m interning at a fashion magazine: dress by oscar de la renta, jacket by jason wu, sandals by bottega veneta2: with dr. nolan: dress by marc by marc jacobs, shoes by ferragamo, bag by celine3: exit interview: marc jacobs head to toeAll images from Style.com.
