CARMEN, CARMEN

Hey look, a post. My apologies for the absence as of late, but then again I have no obligation to do this so apology revoked. Meh. Thanks for all the great suggestions the other day which included Carmen from the famous opera, Carmen. It’s a little bit complicated but let me give you the quick version. Carmen is a gypsy who works in a cigarette factory (DREAM JOB) and falls in love with Jose. Some craziness ensues after she stabs her coworker and they escape with some bandits. But, wouldn’t you know it, Carmen falls out of love with Jose and in love with another dude. Some time later, after some things happen, Jose pleads once more with Carmen to spend her life with him. She says no, and when she goes to check her tumblr he kills her. Oh, what a life. While we’re on the subject of Carmen, I highly suggest you listen to the famous Habanera…it’ll set your Wednesday off right.

CRUELLA DEVILLE, 101 DALMATIANS

Do you know who HATES Cruella Deville? PETA, that’s who. Spending her days designing for her swanky label, House of Deville and spending her nights killing puppies, she’s one of the meanest villains around. Yet, despite her obvious animal cruelty issues, she has impeccable style. I can’t condone the killing of dalmatian puppies and everybody has their own preference on fur but hot damn, she’s an eccentric dresser.

AMEONNA, RAIN SPIRIT OF JAPAN

A couple weeks ago I asked for some suggestions of Asian folklore for Textbook and got tons of responses, so thanks for that. The first one up is Ameonna, a Japanese rain spirit. Legend has it that she exists as a cloud in the daytime and rain in the evening. Pretty snazzy. Collection wise I was happy to hit up Tsumori Chisato and you know, Rodarte because I use them for everything. Hooray for rain spirits.

PERSEPHONE, QUEEN OF HADES

So this past weekend I was boning up on my Greek Mythology, you know by watching Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief because I’m 13 and I thought I’d give Persephone a try. Traditionally she is known as queen of Hades but before that she was just a goddess who was chillin. One day she was hanging out with her nymph friends and Hades kidnapped her. TWIST! Meanwhile, back at Chez Olympus, her mother started flipping out and demanded that she be returned. Hades bowed to the gods’ will but before she left, Persephone ate some pomegranate seeds. As fate would have it, those who eat or drink in the Underworld must stay there FOREVER. However, Persephone was able to spend one season of the year in Hades and live the rest above. The Greeks believed this to be the reason behind the four season—when Persephone is in Hades, her mother’s sadness keeps us in winter. Fun.

DAISY BUCHANAN, THE GREAT GATSBY

I’ve received tons of requests for a re-style of Daisy Buchanan. She was one of the very first posts I did back in 2009 so she was due. Having been unable to marry Gatsby prior to the story taking place, Daisy found herself a rich and suitable man in Tom Buchanan. However, once Gatsby begins hosting lavish parties and bathing in money, she rekindles their relationship. When her husband discovers the affair, he plays on Daisy’s greed and pride to end their love after an intense scene at The Plaza Hotel by exposing Gatsby as a bootlegger. Daisy rushes out of the city with Gatsby chasing after her and in their journey home, Daisy kills Myrtle (a minor character) with Gatsby’s car. Unable to identify the driver, Myrtle’s husband tracks Gatsby as the owner and murders him before committing suicide. Daisy, once in love with Gatsby, fails to attend his funeral and faces no penalty for her crime. Oh Daisy, I wanted to like you so much, but you’re disgusting.
