i’ve always had an interest in greek mythology. i found the olympian belief system really enthralling and the stories that came with it were the best part. major gods that come to mind are zeus, hera, athena, ares, hermes, hephestus, apollo and of course aphrodite. goddess of love and beauty. despite all the tales of read about her over the years, my most vivid image of her comes from boticelli’s the birth of venus. the painting illustrates her being born from the sea in all her crazy beautiful glory. and in keeping with olympian fashion she’d opt for the grecian drapery we all know and love. when doing this post i thought about punching it up with some accessories, but let’s be serious…when you’re wearing these pieces you don’t need much else. enjoy.1: hiiii i’m aphrodite: dress and shoes by reem acra2: i looove love: dress and shoes by chanel haute couture3: i’m sooo pretty: dress and shoes by lela rose
editor’s note: i wouldn’t be surprised if more olympians start popping up soon.

jean paul gaultier haute couture s/s 2010
thoughts: with the notable absence of msr. lacroix, gaultier was a happy reminder of the wild parisian creativity we’ve come to know and expect. as always, there was a strong inspiration and story behind the collection and it shows strong. his inspiration lied in aztec history and the message of avatar…quite the merging of low/high. regardless of whether these pieces are practical or desired at this time, you can’t deny they’re fun to look at. continuing in my haute couture mortal kombat obsession, these bitches would tear that shit up. beware kaisers and new looks.1-5: don’t. mess.

elie saab haute couture s/s 2010
thoughts: beautiful pieces and impeccably made with painstaking detail no doubt. anybody would be happy to shoot or wear these ethereal gowns. i only wish that the house would’ve taken things further, a little more vibrance, a little more variety and joie du vivre. it pains me to say that the above spread makes me think of juvenile fairytales. and if chanel and dior were the mortal kombat of haute couture…these girls would be the ones holding the signs that say “round 1” aka super delicate.1-5: elie saab’s sirens

valentino showed their couture collection today. i must say it is certainly a departure from the emperor. i also must say that we’re dealing with an entirely new house…a re-birth? after this collection it’s hard to say. a re-birth would require some of the same dna and while the skill set remains, i am hard pressed to find the same charm and spirit that valentino himself brought to the collection.1: valentino haute couture a/w 20072: valentino haute couture s/s 2010
