CHRISTINE DAAE, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

Ever seen Phantom of the Opera on Broadway or on film? If you haven’t, I highly recommend it. I think we first saw it when we were kids. It’s a pretty spooky story about a tortured hipster that dwells beneath the Paris Opera House. When new management comes in, things start getting a little crazy. What unfolds is a tale of murder, chandeliers, love and toy monkeys! The heroine of the story is the talented Christine Daae who rises from chorus girl to Prima Donna. Orphaned as a young girl, she grew up in the opera as a ballerina. Anyway, just netflix it, it’s good.

SLEEPING BEAUTY, YET AGAIN

Oh look, it’s Sleeping Beauty again…hooray! As I’ve mentioned before, the original fairy tale has the princess growing up in the castle and wandering the towers to find a spindle. Of course, since her father had banned all spinning wheels and spindles, she’s never seen one and is curious. BAM! MAN DOWN! MAN DOWN! One of the good fairies, who already lessened the curse from death to a true love kiss sleep comes and blankets the castle and court in thorns for protection. A really long time later, Prince John comes to the mythical forest and makes his way to the princess. They kiss and get married and have babies. When he is crowned king, he brings the princess to join him and his mother. When away fighting a crazy war, his mother orders the young family to a secluded cottage so she can cook and eat them. Really long story short, Prince John saves the day and the mother drowns in a pot of snakes and acid or something. Yaaay! Disney!

THEODATE POPE RIDDLE

DISCLAIMER: Today is my mother’s birthday, so send good thoughts out to the world and reblog this like crazy so she feels special. This post was her suggestion.
Most of you probably won’t know who Theodate Pope Riddle is, so let me enlighten you. She was one of the first women architects in America and paved the way for many women working in the field today. She graduated from Miss Porter’s School (now just Porter’s/my backyard) and designed her family estate, Hillstead, in town.
Hillstead
Knowing Farmington as I do, I’d expect her style to be approachable, elegant and understated…more of the J.Crew and kate spade vibe than the Lily Pulitzer vibe. Hillstead now exists as a museum housing Hokusai prints, De Gas ballet dancers and Monet’s haystacks. We also walk the dogs here, it’s fun. Enjoy!

PROFESSOR TRELAWNY, HARRY POTTER WEEK

Good Tuesday morning to you all. I hope you’re enjoying your week thus far as we continue to celebrate the fast approaching release of Deathly Hallows. Good god, I was in the seventh grade when the first book came out and now at nearly 25, I can’t contain my excitement. Yesterday, I received quite a few requests for Professor Trelawny…so, like…here she is. Professor Trelawny is the perfect representation of that oddball teacher that we’ve all had before—a little eccentric, endearingly enthusiastic and somewhat mad. Naturally, eccentric enthusiastic madness means awesome clothes. Enjoy.
