thank you all for the great submissions, keep ‘em coming. several of you suggested marie anotinette. to be honest, i’ve been avoiding the ill fated queen since i started because she is pretty daunting. however, since i’ve been denied internet this past week and have plenty of posts to catch up to i figured i’d give it a shot. everybody knows the drill, she had tons of money, was ill prepared to run a country and had a penchant for crazy hats. there, done. enjoy.
1: the dauphine: hat by jean paul gaultier haute couture, dress by john galliano, tights and shoes by rodarte
2: queen of france: chanel haute couture
3: this could get ugly: hat by l’wren scott, dress by christian dior, shoes by oscar de la renta
p.s. how fitting they are all headless. oh, france.
i’ve always had an interest in greek mythology. i found the olympian belief system really enthralling and the stories that came with it were the best part. major gods that come to mind are zeus, hera, athena, ares, hermes, hephestus, apollo and of course aphrodite. goddess of love and beauty. despite all the tales of read about her over the years, my most vivid image of her comes from boticelli’s the birth of venus. the painting illustrates her being born from the sea in all her crazy beautiful glory. and in keeping with olympian fashion she’d opt for the grecian drapery we all know and love. when doing this post i thought about punching it up with some accessories, but let’s be serious…when you’re wearing these pieces you don’t need much else. enjoy.
1: hiiii i’m aphrodite: dress and shoes by reem acra
2: i looove love: dress and shoes by chanel haute couture
3: i’m sooo pretty: dress and shoes by lela rose
editor’s note: i wouldn’t be surprised if more olympians start popping up soon.
just happened to have both of these open in photoshop next to each other and it was like they all wanted to hang out. as i said in my previous post, i loved them both. but when you see them next to each other chanel looks more advanced for sure. it now also looks like some haute couture version of mortal kombat.
1: in the left corner we have the kaisers fighting for chanel haute couture
2: in the right we have the new looks fighting for christian dior haute couture
*anybody could take them all…except chanel iman would bash some skulls.
chanel haute couture s/s 2010
thoughts: got the same feeling from here that i got from dior, very ethereal. at chanel it was more forward thinking, slightly updated silhouettes while still paying homage to some hallmarks of the house. the absence of black seems to be the topic of choice, the little black dress having been a trademark of the label. there’s clear similarity to the spring 2010 ready to wear show as well, which was almost universally loved. i tend to be unwavering of my support of the couture houses, and this certainly won’t make me stop.
aside from the looks themselves, the amount of work required to make just one of these pieces is unfathomable and sadly will soon be lost. you can’t not admire them.
1: whatup chanel suit/shorts
2: why, that’s a fine dress you have
3: don’t mind me, this is just my awesome cocoon
4: lady gaga appropriate?
5: hot damn couture!
fair warning: this is likely the most outrageous thing i’ve posted to date.
combing through the couture shows i found a look from givenchy that instantly reminded me of the lovable lullaby-ing jigglypuff…a friendly pokemon. i started browsing in alexis mabille and found another pokemon parallel, then another in chanel, another in dior and another in armani prive. the similarities are pretty striking, enjoy!
1: armani prive and ninetails: the gathers on this dress, the detailing on the neckline and the femininity of it all match up to ninetails pretty well.
2: alexis mabille and dragonair: the seamless blue column, the sheer neck and even the hair are reminiscent of this graceful dragon pokemon.
3: givenchy and jigglypuff: she’s wearing a jigglypuff, i swear to god.
4: chanel and jolteon: the sharp collar, jewel detailing and vibrant nature of this piece are a perfect fit for jolteon (evolved form of eevee when you use a thunder stone, duh)
5: christian dior and articuno: grey breasted bird with long regal tail? can you even tell if i’m talking about the model or the pokemon? it’s especially fitting because articuno is one of the legendary pokemon, just as galliano and dior are legendary.
it’s not so far fetched to think of these light-hearted similarities. have a great day all.
*note to pokemon fans: this is limited to the original 151 pokemon because i stopped playing after pokemon sapphire
