MRS. REED, JANE EYRE
Oh, she’s one nasty bitch that Mrs. Reed. As you’ll recall from your high school lit classes, Jane Eyre was Mrs. Reed’s niece and Mr. Reed charged his wife with raising her after his death. Being the god-fearing woman she was, Mrs. Reed obliged. She and her three children tormented poor Jane—throwing books at her, locking her in supposed haunted rooms and basically ruining her life. Eventually Mrs. Reed sent Jane to the Lowood school for some more torture with a religious twist. She was the HBIC of Gateshead and she sucks. When Jane grew older, they made some kind of peace…even after Mrs. Reed told Jane’s only family that she was dead. Good lord.

do you enjoy blanketing far away lands in an endless winter? are you curiously aligning with dogs and against cats? do you turn people to stone with your creepy scepter? well…if you’ve answered yes to all these, you’d probably get along with the white witch. she’s quite a nasty ho and until the pevensie kids came along to destroy her reign there wasn’t much anybody had done about it. gotta hand it to her though, there’s something so badass about keeping narnia in a frozen haze. brrrr.

despite their evil and greedy intentions, i have a soft spot for the malfoy family…especially for narcissa. she herself was never a full-on death eater but just seem to get caught up in the mix. above all, she was devoted to protecting draco. it wasn’t until voldemort started using draco in his schemes that she began to show her true colors. she was horrified at voldemort’s request that draco kill dumbledore, as such, she made snape swear the unbreakable vow to protect him. her most noble act was sparing the life of harry potter at the battle of hogwarts by lying to lord voldemort. she told him that potter was dead after harry reveals to her that draco is alive and in the castle. this act saves the malfoys from a life in azkaban. way to go narcissa, show voldy who’s boss.

i had a lot of requests for esther from the bell jar, so here goes. regardless of her mental issues, i think esther was probably really a little quirky, off beat and likable, especially in this day and age. so she didn’t like the glitz trampy new york city life? who could blame her? most people i know are much like her, same sort of career (she interned at a fashion mag) and same distaste for the “scene” of it all. eventually, esther’s mental health deteriorated and she entered treatment. she equates her depression to being trapped under a bell jar, struggling to breath and survive. after several suicide attempts, esther moves to a new facility with a new doctor, dr. nolan. she prescribes electro-shock therapy and has esther fitted for a diaphragm, freeing her from fear of sex and its consequences. additionally, her friend joan commits suicide—helping esther fully understand death and the story ends esther heading to an exit interview. hooray, esther kicks ass.
