Bill Cunningham’s “On the Street” has become a style index for the fashion crowd, actually, for any crowd willing to gander. It’s one of the earliest predecessors of modern street style and paved the way for guys like Scott Schuman, William Yan and Tommy Ton. The man is quite simply a legend and can’t stop (won’t stop) season after season.
What struck me about this edition is how many voices of menswear are represented. There are the outlandish crew in the top left, the printed crew on the lower left, some trailblazers in the middle, the heritage group on the top right and then there’s a few other sprinkled throughout. The point this makes, the point that I find interesting, is that menswear runs the gamut. Granted, nobody I know has ever said otherwise, but to see it all in one place is a good thing.
Leave it to Bill Cunningham.
I can’t wait to see this, it’s going to be amazing. Every time I see Mr. Cunningham around, I freak out. He’s an institution here in the city and in the fashion world. I think Anna Wintour says it all in the trailer, “I’ve said many times that we all get dressed for Bill…”
Can’t wait.
this afternoon, i joined my family in the upper east side for brunch. it was delicious. afterwards my brother and i decided that we’d take a gander through our favorite upper east side spots. we popped over to the polo mansion, the hermes flagship and then ran through barneys. tired of the crowds and the rather bizarre christian music being belted out on madison ave. we departed for downtown. however, i decided to walk over to bergdorf on my own for a quick run through. on my way i spotted bill cunningham from the new york times clad in his blue jacket. as usual he was snapping from the sidelines and laying low. he seemed to be shooting winterwear, being that this was one of the first winter days here. i love his work and always have, so this is my ode to his trademark blue jacket. i’m not sure who the next bill cunningham will be, but if they’re not wearing blue, they’re not going to make the cut.
