Lady Macbeth is without a doubt one of Shakespeare’s most famous characters. She’s right up their with Romeo, Juliet, Hamlet, Othello and King Lear. Outside of his own work, Lady Macbeth is one of the most famous women ever written. Her character bucked traditional female archetypes at the time and she was portrayed as a strong-willed, power-hungry, self-motivated individual. After inciting her husband to murder King Duncan of Scotland, making him the King, she began to unravel. It’s funny how murdering somebody can seem like the answer to all your problems, but then you have to deal with consequences. She’s at her best in when she sleepwalks and recounts the details of her crime. Lady Macbeth ultimately has a rather unceremonious exit from the play and dies offstage, presumably having committed suicide.
Because when you play the game of thrones you either win or you die.

What Would Irene (Personified) Wear?
I ditched the city for Connecticut this weekend and on the way to dinner my family started asking me what I thought Irene would wear if she was you know, not a hurricane. Right away, I played the Rodarte card and then started thinking some Prabal Gurung—sort of that Miss Havisham whirling mess type, ya know. Later on, Prabal Gurung actually tweeted to ask if his followers thought she’d be an all black type or color-blocking type. I figured if both my Dad and Prabal Gurung wanted to know, I could do a post on it. So here it is and it’s all 95 mph appropriate. Fine family fun for your hurricane tumbling.

MISS HAVISHAM, GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Hey look, it’s everybody’s favorite spinster! Yesterday I finally looked at the Prabal Gurung fall 2011 collection and read it was inspired by Miss Havisham. For me, the inspiration rang true, lots of romantic cuts and a little bit of drama…very Dickensian and Havishamian. For those of you who haven’t read this book in your high school curriculum, allow me to enlighten you. Miss Havisham is a middle aged woman who grew up wealthy and when she was younger, she was left at the altar by the man she loved. That man was only after her fortune. Oh no, drama. After learning this news, she goes bonkers and freezes her life at the moment she found out—clocks stopped, wedding dress forever and one shoe on for the rest of her days. She then adopts a daughter and eventually raises her with the hopes she will destroy men’s lives to seek revenge. Charming. She’s not the main character of the story but she’s certainly a hoot.

another jane austen one for y’all today, elinor dashwood from sense and sensibility. this story is pretty complicated and i’m sure you’ve heard some version of it before so i’ll be brief. let’s just say it’s very austen, sensible smart girl falls victim to the society around her and must disobey her heart’s desire. various events occur in which the man of her desire realizes how much he loves and needs her (with some mistaken identity situations in between) and they live happily ever after in a kick ass english country manor. done.

fanny price from mansfield park
i know you all love a good jane austen book, so let’s move on to mansfield park shall we? it’s pretty typical of austen’s work, love stories gone haywire and a happy-ish ending all set in an idyllic english setting. mansfield park focuses on young fanny price. fanny is from a poor family and she’s sent to live with her rich cousins, the bertrams at mansfield park. because of her background, all her cousins but edmund mistreat her. naturally (should i say ausently?), she falls in love with him. it’s not until her uncle thomas leaves to take care of his plantation that things start to get crazy. these kids, the crawfords show up and start being all fun and fashionable. basically, they all toy with each other’s emotions until fanny and edmund finally realize their incestuous love. okay, there’s more to it (including some juicy scandals) than that but just read it. i’m tired.
