oh archduke franz ferdinand, you’re certainly a tragic case in history. sadly, many will only remember you as a band (albeit a good band). ferdinand was no doubt a romantic, he fell deeply in love with his wife sophie when they were pen pals. he refused to marry any other and in an unprecedented move, was the first habsburg to marry somebody from a non-ruling (or previously ruling) family of europe. despite their love, there were caveats to this marriage and sophie was often kept far from her husband at state functions as a matter of hierarchy. politically, ferdinand advocated independence for ethnic groups of the austro hungarian empire. however, before he could assume the austro hungarian throne (he was heir presumptive) he was assasinated along with his beloved sophie. his murder is recognized as a key factor in the start of world war i. from what i can infer, he was certainly a romantic, favored the double breasted look and was no doubt a man’s man. however, as a major power player of europe, he probably had to have that dramatic flair that all successful leaders have.
