jane eyre was undoubtedly one of the most unenthralling books i’ve ever read. dour, tragic and most likely a plain jane, this governess materialized quite well in my head. from the moment we’re presented with her gloomy gateshead childhood, to the bizarre encounters with bertha mason and finally the fated reunion with her beloved, blind rochester, we develop a clear image of her. yes, she is strong, having dealt with things we can scarcely imagine but she is also conservative and reserved. fall 2009 was certainly similar, with the gloomy economy mirroring jane eyre’s life. behold, the conservative, strong willed jane eyre.
